Blood cells are indicators of systemic dysfunction
In chronic disease states, red blood cells often carry molecular traces of their environment. Oxidative stress, glycation, altered lipid composition, and reduced deformability are commonly observed in metabolic and inflammatory conditions.
These changes do not originate in the erythrocyte. They arise from the systemic milieu in which the cell circulates.
Treating the cell as the primary problem risks confusing correlation with causation. Erythrocytes respond to biochemical conditions; they do not independently initiate vascular pathology.
From a systems perspective, the red blood cell functions as an indicator—a measurable reflection of upstream dysfunction. Addressing the indicator without addressing the system rarely leads to durable outcomes.
